Normally, touchscreens have sensors integrated into the display, or a special panel that overlays said screen, but that's not at all the case for the V423-TM that NEC has just launched.

The new display, with a diagonal of 42 inches, uses optical-imaging technology instead.

Essentially, it uses four cameras to “sense” up to six touch points at the same time. It's a sort of motion tracking technology really, only not all that complex.

That said, the display also has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, a brightness of 430 cd/m2 (pretty high really), a contrast ratio of 1300:1 and a pair of 10W built-in speakers.

There's even an expansion slot for OPS slot components (Open Pluggable Specification). Basically, an OPS component can add LAN, USB 3.0 and various other ports to the LED-backlit LCD.

The price of the NEC V423-TM is $2,399 / €1,744.
