The first revision to offer cross-platform comparisons

The new 3DMark has just been launched by Futuremark. The company dropped any version number from the fresh revision (it's simply called 3DMark) in order to stress the fact that it’ll be available for multiple platforms (Android, iOS and Windows RT).

Although this build is designed as cross-platform benchmark tool, the counterpart for the mobile operating systems is to roll out at a later, yet unspecified date (but no later than Q1, 2013). When released, you will be able to compare results from all supported devices.

However, it’ll feature the same Ice Storm test included in the desktop version and users will be able to compare the scores across the platforms.

This is the only cross-platform benchmark as Cloud Gate and Fire Strike are not available for Android and iOS as they are designed for Windows notebooks and typical home PCs and for high-performance gaming PCs, respectively.

For Windows, this is the first 3DMark to encompass tests for DirectX 11, DirectX 10, and DirectX 9 level hardware, thus making it the most versatile of all its reiterations.

The recommended specifications for Windows are:

• OS: Windows 7 or Windows 8 • CPU: 1.8 GHz dual-core Intel or AMD CPU • RAM: 4GB • Graphics: 3DMark Ice Storm requires 128 MB video card memory, Cloud Gate requires 256 MB video card memory, Fire Strike requires 1.5 GB video card memory, and Fire Strike Extreme requires 1.5 GB. • HDD: 3 GB free disk space

The minimum specifications for iOS are:

• OS: iOS 5.0 • iPhone: 4 • iPad: 2 • iPod: iPod Touch (5th gen) • Storage: 300MB

For Android the minimum specifications require version 3.1 of the OS, 1GB of RAM, OpenGL ES 2.0 compatible graphics and 300MB of storage. The details for the CPU have not been made available at the moment.
