A new 3D Mario video game will be launched on the Wii U home console during October in order to boost sales of the device in time for the crucial Christmas shopping season.

A report from CVG cites sources inside Nintendo saying that the company is waiting for a new Wii U system update to be launched during the summer before delivering big new titles for the device.

Mario Kart Wii U and the new 3D Mario title will be playable at E3 2013, when the publisher also plans to deliver a launch date.

After the less than impressive sales of the Wii U during the last quarter Nintendo is keen to revitalize interest in the platform by launching new high-profile games.

The company expected to sell 9 million Wii U consoles during 2013.
