You'd think that an optical disk drive, nowadays, would have a USB 3.0 connector, in order to be able to write data as fast as possible.

That's not the case for the latest product from I-O Data though. In fact, the company chose to use a USB 2.0 port, limiting the writing speed to 24x.

The advantage is a low price of 7,560 Yen, which corresponds to about $76 / €58 – 76, according to exchange rates. 24x is the single-layer DVD speed.

The DVR-UA24EZ, as the product is called, does have the I-O Data Mach USB software, but regardless of the optimizations, there is no way to bypass the 480 Mbps bottleneck of the hardware.

Sales will start in August. DOS / V machine (32.64 bit), Windows Vista SP2 or later (32-bit), Windows XP SP3 or later, Windows 8 (32.64 bit), and Windows 7 Windows RT are the supported operating systems.
