Even though the 2.5-inch form factor can be seen as the standard size of solid state drives, there already are a number of more compact solutions, some of which have just been released by Foremay, for multiple applications.

The 1.8-inch form factor was not released too long ago but has seen a fast rate of adoption ever since.

Mostly, it has high advantages on the mobile and enterprise segments, where its compact size allows thinner form factors and a greater storage density, respectively.

The new units that Foremay came up with are high-speed solid state drives that will expand several of its product lines.

There will be drives meant for HPC applications, industrial PCs and, of course, high-end laptops, where a more compact SSD will enable a thinner form factor.

To be more specific, the company has prepared new additions to the SC199 industrial line, the OC177 industrial/commercial series and the EC188 commercial series.

All three types, save for the OC177 models, come with metal housings, and the rest of their specifications is more or less the same.

The drives have a thickness of between 3 mm and 5 mm, capacities of up to 400 GB and read/write speeds of up to 280 MB/s.

Other specifications include the micro SATA interface and a random 4K read/write performance of up to 30,000/15,000 IOPS.

"The length of our new 1.8 SATA SSD is actually 7mm less than an American Express credit card,” said Jason Hoover, Foremay's VP Marketing,

“By offering both commercial and industrial operating temperatures, the 1.8 SATA SSD empowers design engineers with great flexibility and easy use for designing the next generation of slim and compact size computers for commercial, enterprise and industrial applications," he added.

Unfortunately, no sort of pricing details were mentioned in the official announcement.
