Universal Electronics' NevoSL WiFi remote control

Here are two assertions that I'm sure you agree with. Remote controls are devices you use when you're comfortable with your statuary couch position. Right. Secondly, having no remote control for a TV can be nightmarish. Still, who would pay $500 in order to get a universal remote control that comes with a touchscreen?

Aren't buttons enough? Universal Electronics' NevoSL said you need more than that. You need a touchscreen with seventeen front-panel buttons and a scroll-wheel. They probably meant to say that you need PDA that doubles as a remote control.

Here's how it works. Technically, the device is an "IP addressable intelligent bridge for wireless home theater control in the networked home." This means it will allow you to control hidden devices even through walls using the NevoSL's WiFi capability. The thing uses NevoStudio 2.0 Software in order to communicate via WiFi and ActiveSync link with your PC.

The touchscreen is 3.5" Bright Color TFT LCD screen. It features buttons that "work" on widescreen TVs, AV receivers, projectors and just about anything you don't have the money to buy. A Palm-Type PDA stylus is tucked away in the bottom right of the remote and may be used for selection options from the screen as well as accessing the on/off switch and reset button. There's a feature that might even surprise the real slothful people. Thanks to its built sensor, you can reactivate the TV screen just by moving the thing.

The bad news is that Nevo Studio software programming is limited to Windows XP, but will probably come with Mac and Vista compatibility "later".
