Developer Cryptic Studios will release the biggest expansion to Neverwinter to date, Elemental Evil, on April 7.

The free-to-play massively multiplayer online role-playing game is available on Windows PC and will make its debut on the Xbox One home entertainment system from Microsoft on March 31.

The game is based on a Forgotten Realms universe, exploring the secrets, mysteries and evils around the fabled city of Neverwinter and its surroundings, allowing gamers to enjoy some Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing action in digital form.

The Elemental Evil expansion was initially due out mid-March, but Neverwinter Executive Producer Rob Overmeyer explained that the team's plans turned out to be a little more ambitious than initially anticipated, which translated into a slight delay.

The Elemental Evil expansion will be the biggest one to date, the team essentially revamping nearly all in-game systems, introducing an increased level cap, and a brand new class, the Oathbound Paladin.

In the expansion, players will be able to battle the Cults of Elemental Evil, who are trying to destroy the Sword Coast by draining the forces of nature.

Adventurers will have to save Neverwinter and its surroundings from the evil cultist, gaining shiny new gear in the process, and a few extra levels. The in-game level cap will be raised from 60 to 70, and there will be a host of new challenges for fans of the role-playing game to master.

A lot of exciting content is coming this April

The developers even prepared a surprise for long-time fans of the Forgotten Realms setting, in the form of a cameo from Baldur's Gate protagonist Minsc, together with his trusty companion Boo.

The biggest change by far is the introduction of the brand new Paladin class, a versatile warrior who can become either tank or healer, by choosing between the Oath of Protection and Oath of Devotion.

The two paths offer unique passive and powers to the class, modifying the basic abilities. By taking the Oath of Devotion, a Paladin will get his healing power increased by 100 percent and will increase a friendly target's stats by 5 percent for a short duration, after restoring their health.

The Oath of Protection will confer Paladins a 10 percent increase to damage resistance, as well as enable them to generate 500 percent more threat with their attacks. Furthermore, Paladins will gain power proportionally to the amount of damage they take.
