Sometimes it really is tragic to feel inspired, create some neat beats or riffs and then simply forget them, especially if you're the kind of musician who can "write" tunes in almost any place and virtually at any hour. I play guitar and I often find myself humming some notes that really seem to match into a nifty theme, perfect for a song; but if I cannot take out my phone and record my humming, I might as well forget about the new tune, because in 99% of such cases, by the time I get home or to the studio, the "next big hit" has flown away.
Even more, imagine the situations when you’re rehearsing or just amusing yourself while playing, and good things come out: wouldn't it be a great idea if you could have a small, portable and smart device to remember what you’ve been working on?
Indeed that would be great and Line 6 know it; and since they're among the most innovative music gear manufacturers in the world, from such an idea to the actual device couldn’t have been that long of a road. Line 6 are now proudly announcing the birth of the BackTrack and Backtrack + Mic, two pocket-size recorders especially built for this purpose.
While small and light enough to fit in your guitar case, your purse or even your pocket, the Line 6 BackTrack is a smart and truly useful tool. It starts recording from the very instant it detects a signal: just plug your guitar (or other instrument of choice) in the 1/4'' TRS jack, connect the outputs to your amp and start playing, letting the BackTrack do the rest. And if you feel that some groovy phrase is about to come out, press the "Mark" button – it will highlight and separate that piece, knowing it's part of your next big hit.
The Line 6 BackTrack comes in two versions, the standard one, with line in input only, running on a 1GB card capable to store up to 12 hours of recorded signal in WAV format, and the BackTrack + Mic one, with a memory twice as big (24 hours) and a built-in microphone for acoustic events. Both tools boast 24-bit/48kHz audio encoding and are USB rechargeable, with Line 6 claiming up to 8 hours of continuous operation on a charge.
Of course, the Line 6 BackTracks come with forward and reverse controls, USB 2.0 speed and the + Mic model even sports a headphones out and output gain control. Once they hit the shelves of major retailers, these pocket recorders will be priced around $100 (standard version) and $150 (microphone model).
