Netscape Communications Corporation (a.k.a Netscape) is an American computer services company, best known for its web browser. The browser was once dominant in terms of usage share, but it has lost most of its share to Internet Explorer during the first browser war.

Recently Netscape has announced the availability of the new Netscape Navigator 9.0, available as a standalone installation for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. It cannot be getting through an ordinary upgrade of your current version, therefore, you'll have to install it. This 9.0 version is based on Firefox and has a couple of unique features built-in.

Highlights:

- integration with Netscape portal which is now a social bookmarking site. From within the web browser without visiting Netscape, you can share and vote for web pages you'll find interesting - one can read the latest news directly from the browser - automatically fixing for the commonly mis-typed URLs - a link pad allowing you to save interesting links without cluttering the bookmarks

Netscape also started the open source Mozilla project back in 1998. Netscape has publicly released the source code of Netscape Communicator 4.0 in the hopes that it would become a popular open source project. It placed this code under the Netscape Public License, which was similar to the GNU General Public License but allowed Netscape to continue to publish proprietary work containing the publicly released code. However, after having released the Communicator 4.0 code this way, Netscape proceeded to work on Communicator 4.5 which was focused on improving email and enterprise functionality.

Netscape also maintains the Netscape.com portal, which is a popular social-news site, similar to Digg.com. Netscape company is said to have its own programming staff devoted to the development and support for the series of web browsers.
