Ed Boon, who is the leader of the NetherRealm development studio, has announced that his team was no longer working on the Mortal Kombat franchise for the time being and was focusing on creating a new intellectual property.

The veteran video game creator has not mentioned whether his company was still linked to the fighting game genre or whether they are trying to move into new space.

The new game will likely be published by Warner Bros.

Ed Boon also confirmed that there are no plans to deliver more downloadable content for the Mortal Kombat reeboot that was launched earlier this year.

Players already received access to new characters like Skarlet, Kenshi, Rain and, last but not least, Freddy Krueger of Nightmare on Elm Street.

In the near future fighting game fans can look forward to Street Fighter x Tekken from Capcom and the other side of the cross over, created by Namco Bandai.
