Netflix Fumbles Lead to Big Losses in Consumer Satisfaction

Customer satisfaction is fickle thing, one year you've got it the other you don't. But rising prices, making life harder for your customers and generally acting confused are guaranteed to get their attention and not in a good way.

Netflix learned that the hard way, as a new consumer satisfaction report shows. The site lost the most out of the 40 large sites and online retailers that the report focuses on, going from 79 points, from 86.

Put in context, that means going from ranking second in the report to being about average.

Amazon is having no such trouble though, it's scored the highest, 88 points, up two points from last year, when it tied with Netflix. Whatever it's doing, it's doing right, the giant online retailer is going from strength to strength.

Here's how Netflix made me less happy:

1) For cost-savings I needed to choose DVD vs. streaming. I chose streaming, and now I'm missing out on a *lot* of content.

2) They did away with exposing queues to friends. I really miss that. This wasn't a recent change, but I still miss it.

3) Their front-page interfaces are really goofy now. And there are several different views for seeing episodes of a given TV show, and it's not clear to me which actions on my part lead to those different views.

4) It's not clear if/how I can ask to be sent an email when a TV show I'm watching has a new episode available for streaming.

5) (Before I dropped DVD's) for some reason that no longer expose the association between different DVD's making up a given TV show. For example, it used to be the case that when looking at one of Bleach's DVD's, I was shown a list of the other DVD's comprising the series, including those DVDs that were being tracked by Netflix but weren't yet available. That functionality appears gone, and now all I can do is look for then via Netflix's "search" box.

5) As a (now) streaming-only user, it would be nice to be able to see a list of DVD-only new arrivals, so that I can evaluate if it's time to re-active my DVD service. I don't think I can.

6) Once I cancelled my DVD service, I lost access to my DVD queue. As though the record of what videos I'd watched, which ones I was waiting to see, and what my reviews were of ones I watched, were no longer relevant. Talk about having no clue about what (at least this) customer cares about!
