NetSecL 3.0 is out and it brings quite a lot of changes and updates over the previous versions. NetSecL is now based on openSUSE, but still comes with the same tools and enhancements you've come to expect from the security-focused distro.

"[With NetSecL 3.0] you can fully enjoy the features of GrSecurity hardened kernel and penetration tools OR if you like to do some penetration testing you can directly run all tools from the live DVD," Yuri Stanchev wrote in the official announcement.

"NetSecL firewall is included as always and most of the penetration tools are ported to the new platform," he added.

"Also we'd like to mention that we've got many other programs up and running with GrSecurity enabled, which is great success especially when it comes to programs like wine, OpenOffice, Vuze, Qemu and many gnome applications," he explained.

NetSecL 3.0 is a major departure from the previous releases, but the developers focused on bringing all of the distinctive features to the new release as well. Specifically, many packages have been adapted to work with GrSecurity.

The developers strongly recommend that you use an EXT3 file system for the root partition if you choose to install the distro. Also note that the password for both admin and the root user on the DVD is 'linux'.

About NetSecL

NetSecL is a security-focused Linux distribution based openSUSE. Previously it had been based on the tried and tested Slackware Linux distribution.

NetSecL includes a large set of penetration tools designed to test the security of various setups and operating systems, and has all the incoming ports closed and services turned off. It also doesn't include any servers (HTTP, FTP, etc). The NetSecL Linux distribution can run on both 32- and 64-bit platforms.
