Neptune OS, a Linux operating system fully based upon Debian "Wheezy," is now at version 4.2 and comes with an impressive array of changes and modifications, improving the original release a great deal.

ZevenOS-Neptune 4.x branch is called "It's all about you" and it was initially made available back in June. This is the second update for the distribution and the devs have refined some of the features and have added some new packages into the mix.

The system is based on KDE, but don't expect to find a regular stock version implemented. It's clear that the devs have put a lot of effort into making the DE experiences unique. Users can immediately recognize what distribution they are looking at just with a glance, and that's always a good sign.

Neptune OS 4.2 is a great update

It's not certain for how long this distribution is going to be supported or how many updates will be released for this particular branch, but the latest version is proof that its makers are very serious and that they want to keep it going for a long time.

"We are proud to announce the release of Neptune 4.2. This service release comes with a brand new kernel 3.16.3 (+bfq I/O Scheduler) which includes many driver updates and improvements in power saving functions. Our improved installer now offers you to install on uefi capable PCs and brings in a new option which allows you to disable sudo for your user during installation."

"Several security, bugfixes and updates were merged into this release. The bash "shellshock" vulnerability is fixed, Chromium to version 37, LibreOffice to version 4.3.2, Kdenlive to version 0.9.10 and Wireshark to 1.12," say the developers in the announcement.

Neptune OS is one of the Linux distributions that are using btrfs as the default file system. A new package called btrfs snapshotting tool snapper has been added and it's used to create snapshots of the operating system, not to mention the fact that it can be used to recover files.

If you already have a previous version of Neptune OS installed, it's possible to update it with the software center. Also, the Neptune KDE repo is enabled by default, which ensures that KDE updates arrive in a timely manner. A complete list of changes and updates can be found in the official announcement.
