The published data might come from the French Facebook phishing site

It seems that it has become a fashion among hackers to phish and then publish the account information belonging to Facebook customers that unknowingly fell victim to a malicious campaign.

Cruel Intention, a hacker from Nepal, published the usernames, passwords, email addresses and other info belonging to mostly Indian and French customers of the popular social network.

Given the fact that many of the victims are French and recently security experts discovered that one of the best Facebook phishing sites actually targets French speakers, it shouldn’t surprise anyone if there is a connection between the two.

In the past few days we’ve witnessed a considerable increase in Facebook phishing campaigns and that’s why I will take the opportunity to remind everyone to check a website before rushing to log-in.

Be sure to check the domain’s name as in most cases that’s the best clue that can tell apart a legitimate site from an illegal one.

Update. The hacker contacted me to clarify that the more than 6000 Facebook account details come from citizens of France, Spain, England, India and other countries. He claims that the main reason for phishing the accounts was to prove how unaware people are when it comes to cyber security.
