Ridley Scott will serve as producer, director reveals

Shortly after the announcement that Neill Blomkamp would direct an “Alien” movie, the writer-director tried to assure fans that it wouldn’t be for another while that he would actually get to work on it, citing his commitment to “Chappie” as the main thing that held him back.

It seems that, in between promotional appearances and traveling around the world, Blomkamp has also made time to work on “Alien,” revealing in a recent Empire podcast that he actually had to change a few things about his original idea when Ridley Scott, who directed the 1979 classic and is now working on “Prometheus 2,” told him that it would “bump into” this one.

Blomkamp also casually reveals that Scott is serving as producer on the new film, which, apparently, will take into consideration only the first 2 films in the franchise and completely ignore everything else. As he puts it, after “Aliens,” the franchise went in the wrong direction and, “as a fan,” he plans to make things right again.

He wouldn’t go into more details, which makes sense considering they don’t even have a script yet, but he did say that the moment the official title is revealed, fans will get the biggest clue possible, which will help them solve the riddle of the plot.

“It’s kinda quite bold,” he says. “I have my own idea but it gives away too much if I say the title. But in the event that it doesn’t work, I’m dead in the water…”

Of course, he could be just teasing, since the project is still in the early stages.

Blomkamp is also writing the script, but there’s only one star attached to the cast right now: Sigourney Weaver, who will be reprising her role as Ellen Ripley. The director said not long ago that this movie would never happen if Ripley didn’t come back.
