It’ll take place after “Prometheus 2,” which makes no sense

Great news for “Alien” fans: after teasing the world with concept art for some kind of secret project he was working on a couple of months ago, director Neill Blomkamp (“District 9” and “Elysium”) has been confirmed for a planned “Alien” sequel from 20th Century Fox.

The studio confirms the news to HitFix, with the mention that this is not a follow-up to Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus” from 2012. In fact, this new film would take place after “Prometheus 2” and thus further expand on the universe Scott started to create with the 1979 original film, the studio says.

Considering the art Blomkamp shared with the fans 2 months ago (which you can also see in the Instagram posts below), this makes very little sense, because he was clearly thinking about bringing Ripley and Hicks back.

If the new “Alien” takes place after the events in “Prometheus 2,” that’s not possible. Then again, at the time he posted the photos, he wasn’t signed to Fox for the sequel, or so he said: so chances are he was only posting pictures he liked, of a movie he hypothetically would have loved to make.

That movie isn’t the same one with the one he will make, which means his vision must have changed when he was actually approached for it.

For the time being, “Alien” doesn’t have a script, let alone an estimated release date. Thinking it might be out sooner than 2017 is, based on details available right now, unrealistic.

Um... So I think it's officially my next film. #alien A photo posted by Brownsnout (@neillblomkamp) on Feb 18, 2015 at 3:55pm PST
