The next game in the Need for Speed racing series has just been confirmed and it’s a full-fledged reboot titled simply Need for Speed. The emphasis, according to EA and Ghost Games, is on urban car culture as well as deep customization. A teaser trailer with in-game footage and a few screenshots are also available, depicting the latest version of the Frostbite engine.

The Need for Speed series has been around for 20 years, and the racing franchise published by Electronic Arts has gone through lots of highs and lows throughout this lengthy period of time.

Seeing as how recent installments haven’t exactly delighted fans, even if they used previous strategies that brought lots of success, EA and developer Ghost Games are completely rebooting the series while going towards the urban car racing and tuning culture seen in NFS: Underground 1 and 2.

The new Need for Speed launches this fall

The new reboot is called simply Need for Speed and focuses on features that fans want, according to the two companies. These include deep customization, authentic urban car culture, a nocturnal open world, and an immersive story.

“Need for Speed is one of the most iconic names in gaming, and we're returning it to greatness in this reboot,” Marcus Nilsson, executive producer at Ghost Games, explains. “Pulling on our 20 years of history, and then taking a year out from releasing a game, we are making the game we’ve always wanted to. We're listening to the fans and delivering an experience that will capture their imagination and unleash their passion for cars and speed.”

The new Need for Speed title has already received a teaser trailer with in-game footage, not to mention a few screenshots depicting some great old and new cars like the new Ford Mustang, an old Porsche 911 or a Nissan 180SX.

The trailer also confirms that players will race throughout a city and that they’ll also have to deal with cops, so expect plenty of police pursuits.

The full gameplay video for the new Need for Speed is coming next month on June 15. Until then, check out the first glimpses below.

Need for Speed launches this fall on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and according to its developer, it uses the latest version of the Frostbite engine, just as the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront does.
