Nec is preparing to hit the market once again. This time it is VersaPro UltraLite VC notebook that will turn some heads, since Nec has just released it into the market. Although at first the notebook seems to be rather thin, don't let the appearance fool you since the product itself can withstand
up to 331 pounds of pressure on its case, making it as "tough" as Panasonic's Toughbook.
Despite the fact that it's a tough little fellow, the 12.1" NEC UltraLite VersaPro VC weighs just 2.14 pounds making it as light as your casual notebook. This is quite a surprise considering that the notebook is meant to be tough but it won't be that much of a burden for mobile PC users. The notebook uses only low-power CPUs in the form of the Core Duo U2400 (1.06GHz) and Celeron M 423 (1.06GHz) if you prefer a cheaper solution. With the "M" battery, the UltraLite VersaPro can stay alive for almost 7 hours with the Core Duo CPU and 6 hours with the Celeron M processor. If you prefer to use the "L" (stands for large?) battery, those run times are extended to 14.5 hours of standby and 12.3 hours respectively in case you use the Celeron CPU.
The UltraLite VersaPro VC comes as default with a 12.1" XGA display capable of a native resolution of 1024x768 pixels, 512MB of memory (upgradeable to a maximum of 1.5GB ), PCMCIA slot, Secure Digital integrated card and two USB 2.0 ports. Among the optionals, you can choose a dual-layer DVD burner and SATA hard drives up to 100GB (in case you don't need a large hard drive you can choose a smaller and cheaper one). A base system powered by a Core 2 Duo CPU will have a price tag of around $1,984.
