Police have identified the man perpetrating a deadly mass shooting on the Navy Yard in D.C. as one Aaron Alexis.

A final count reveals that he has shot twelve people, before being gunned down and killed by law enforcement officers.

His job allowed him access to the Washington Navy Yard and he used a pass to get in, CBS News explained. Said pass belonged to a former co-worker.

The Navy reservist was employed by "The Experts," a subcontractor on an HP Enterprise Services contract, and worked with the Navy Marine Corps Intranet network.

USA Today reported that he was staying at the Residence Inn in Southwest Washington. While police and the FBI are still looking for his motive, there are signs of him experiencing emotional and financial issues.

Alexis was previously under arrest in 2010 for unlawfully using his weapon. In 2004, he damaged a vehicle and, in 2010, he shot through the ceiling of his flat. He was never charged.

The latter took place during his time with Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 46 at the Naval Air Station in Fort Worth.

"It was determined that Alexis was cleaning a gun in his apartment when it accidentally went off. [...] No one was injured,'' Tarrant County District Attorney Joe Shannon Jr. explains.

A friend of the shooter's, 50-year-old Michael Ritrovato, explained that Alexis wanted to quit his job because he was not getting paid.

His payments were due weeks ago and he still hadn't received any money. The contractor had previously hired him for a job in Japan.

Ritrovato had recommended Alexis for more than one job with the government, but he had not been hired. His financial woes also translated in him not having the means to fix his car, which broke down several times this year.

"We talked about car problems. We talked about him needing money. [...] He was upset," Ritrovato recalls.
