The Navy will start using laser weaponry that can burn through drones and any other kind of vehicle, boat or aircraft from afar.

A demonstration on how the technology works has been uploaded on YouTube and marked as the Laser Weapon System (LaWS).

CBS News quotes Rear Admiral Matthew Klunder who mentions that they will be using the weapon in short time in the Persian Gulf.

The first order of business when it comes to deploying the device is having it burn down Iranian drones and stop speedboats used in attacks against U.S. Navy ships.

"This will indeed be the first, real world deployment of a directed energy weapon," he describes.

The machinery used pulses to send out laser energy, which only costs the Navy under $1 (€0.76) per hit.
