Video game developer Naughty Dog has waited for a long time to officially confirm the existence of a PlayStation 4 version of its hit The Last of Us, but the company and Sony are now keen to explain exactly why fans of the series should consider picking it up when it is finally launched.

Neil Druckmann, the creative director working on the project, tells Edge that one of the features that should be interesting to those who have already played through the game is the audio commentary for the cutscenes, which will be available from the start.

He explains that, “That was something we did at the end of production for PS3. I don’t remember if we could have fit it on the disc, but we didn’t have time to edit it. It’s Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson and me sitting down and watching all the cinematics, talking about our experience of crafting those characters and bringing them to life. It will play through the cinematics and there will be an audio option to change from the regular audio to the behind-the-scenes commentary.”

The Last of Us is a fascinating video game experience that relies a lot on emotions and it will be interesting to see both leading actors who have worked on the game and the main developer explaining some of the choices they have made.

All those who pick up the PlayStation 4 version of the title will also be able to play the Left Behind downloadable content, but only once they finish the main story.

Neil Druckmann believes that the entire package should be seen as a chance for fans to get more insight into the gameplay and the story.

He adds, “It’s not a totally brand-new experience, but when you’re seeing the film, the clarity of the image is much closer to how the director and the team initially saw it. There’s something nice about that. I think if there was nothing but remakes, that would be pretty sad for the console. Just like any system out there, any medium, it’s going to be a mixture.”

At the moment, Naughty Dog is putting the finishing touches on the PlayStation 4 version of The Last of Us, but the studio is also working on two other titles for the Sony next-gen consoles, including an entirely new Uncharted title.

No details have so far been offered about it, but the first gameplay video might be released during the coming E3 2014.
