Still tethered for all except old-bootrom 3GS users

The infamous iPhone Dev Team has just issued an update confirming some progress on the iOS 5.0.1 front. Apparently they’ve enabled redsn0w to ‘natively’ recognize iOS 5.0.1 IPSWs so that developers are no longer required to point the software at an older firmware restoration file.

As usual, Musclenerd takes it upon himself to spread the word that the Team is attempting to make the lives of Cydia devs a tad easier by adding 5.0.1 beta keys to redsn0w 0.9.9b8.

The hacker directs followers to the official Dev Team blog where they reveal the following:

“…redsn0w version 0.9.9b8 will natively recognize the 5.0.1 beta that Apple let developers start testing this week (so you don’t have to play the ‘point at 5.0 IPSW’ trick). Because the IPSW isn’t public, you’ll still need to provide it once to redsn0w (at which point it will cache all the important pieces so you don’t need to select it again).”

“For those 3GS and i4 users who preserve their baseband, the Mac version can also produce the NO_BB_* custom IPSWs for 5.0.1. (But please note that ultrasn0w doesn’t get updated for betas like this.)”

“This is still a tethered jailbreak for all except old-bootrom 3GS users.”

The post includes download links to redsn0w 0.9.9b8 for Mac and redsn0w 0.9.9b8 for Windows.

iOS 5.0.1 is currently in testing in Apple-developer circles with the primary focus to address a battery drain issue for iOS 5 customers.

Several other fixes are included in the upcoming software update, including a security patch for iPad 2. The tablet is vulnerable in the face of a simple magnet that puts the device to sleep.

The public version of iOS 5.0.1 is scheduled to launch in a few weeks, according to an Apple spokesperson. An untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 is still unavailable (except for the aforementioned old-gen iPhone).
