With pop-up notifications, fast reply functionality

The developers behind the CyanogenMod code have announced a new feature coming soon to all devices powered by their Jelly Bean-based CM 10 builds, namely Native Quick Messages.

The enhanced SMS application was designed to provide users with a notification as soon as a new message arrived, and to enable them to respond to the text right away.

The team announced that the feature has already been merged into their Jelly Bean-based code, and that it will make it to Nightly builds soon.

Some of the main features of the SMS application include:

- Display pop-up Quick Message dialog when message received - Multi-message support with swipe between messages - Reply to individual messages - Mark individual messages as 'Read' or dismiss them all - 'Wake and unlock' device on message received

Following the initial announcement, the team also unveiled an update to the CM10 feature, announcing that some more functionality will be added to it, to increase its usability.

Based on the feedback received, the team decided to enable users to selectively launch the quick reply panel straight from the notification bar, provided that they don’t have to go with the pop-up notification panel.

David van Tonder explains the manner in which the team will add the 'Quick reply' option to the notification bar to allow for fast replies straight from the notification.

“It will only show up if (1) The Quick message pop-up is disabled (no need showing two pop-ups), (2) It is an SMS message and (3) it is a single message or a thread from the same sender,” he notes.

The code hasn’t been finalized yet, but people behind CyanogenMod are working on making it available in the not too distant future.

Those who would like to have a look at the manner in which the enhanced SMS application works – a feature that is not present within the stock Jelly Bean platform – should grab one of the latest CyanogenMod 10 nightlies and give it a try.
