A student has incurred a fine and has had her diploma temporarily taken away from her over wearing an inappropriate accessory to graduation.

Chelsey Ramer, a senior in Escambia Academy High School in Alabama, wore an eagle feather attached to her cap.

She and a group of friends had asked the principal in advance for the option to wear the feather, and they were all denied.

Ramer, who is a member of the Poarch Creek Band of Indians community, is one of only three Native Americans teenagers attending the private institution.

HuffPost reported that they were made to sign contracts banning them from straying from the guidelines for graduation outfits.

Ramer now has to pay $1,000 (€765), and both her diploma and her transcript file are being withheld at the school.
