Nathan Drake Is More Popular Than Lara Croft, Says Uncharted Dev

The gaming industry has its fair share of iconic characters that have transcended their own games and are now part of our everyday life, seeing them almost all around us. One such character is the lovely Lara Croft, which is the star of Eidos' Tomb Raider franchise, and which even saw movies made based on her.

But she's not the only popular video-game character, as Naughty Dog, the company responsible for the hit Uncharted: Drake's Fortune game believes that its main character, Nathan Drake, is becoming more popular than the relic-hunting Lara. Bruce Straley, the director of the game, talked about the popularity of the two explorers and he believes that Nathan has surpassed the tomb-raiding female, and that he makes a very memorable appearance in the first game and will certainly make a great impression on gamers in the upcoming second title, Uncharted: Among Thieves.

“I feel that Nathan Drake can stand on his own in any line up of the video game pantheon,” said Straley. “We've created something new with him by infusing him with traits more associated with a good movie protagonist than just a video game icon. According to not an insignificant number of reviews, press, and forums, people have really taken to Nathan Drake's character. I think people like him because he's compelling, and a much needed breath of fresh air in an industry that's been a bit stale for a while, in terms of characters.”

While whether he may or may not be right can only be decided by fans, both video-game characters have a very solid personality and will be remembered for their virtual adventures. Look forward to seeing Nathan in the future Uncharted: Among Thieves game, which will be very interesting, promising new stealth sequences as opposed to the pretty much random shooting encounters in the first game. Lara on the other hand is set to reappear on the Xbox 360, as two downloadable episodes will soon be launched by Eidos for the latest game, Tomb Raider Underworld.
