News from Tennessee says that, this past December 13, a female giraffe by the name Margarita living in captivity at this facility delivered a healthy calf. Caretakers say that the baby Masai giraffe was born sometime during nighttime, and that it stood up shortly after delivery.

“We’ve been tracking Margarita’s pregnancy for about a year and estimated her due date to be in early December,” Kate Cortelyou told the press in an interview.

“I arrived at the Giraffe barn around 7:30 a.m. [on Dec. 13] to find a dry, healthy, standing baby giraffe, which is the perfect way to find them. We are so thrilled about the latest addition to our herd,” she added.

According to Zoo Borns, the baby Masai giraffe is a female, and it weighed about 180 pounds (81.5 kilograms) when it arrived into the world. Besides, it measured about 6 feet and 5 inches (1.96 meters) in height.

The baby giraffe now lives in a barn with its mom and will probably make its public debut in about two months' time. Keepers stress that the calf will be allowed to explore the world outside the barn if and when vets say that it can handle the weather.
