Napster and Ericcson join forces against iPod and iTunes

The mirage of digital music

Seeing how the music download market evolves, one would think the planet is full of music lovers. Ever since Apple started iTunes, all companies have catched the music fever. Nowadays, it's trendy to offer a 2GB mail account and an "all-you-can-eat" subscription plan or the
possibility to buy a single song, but not cheaper than 99 cents.

From Yahoo and MSN to Napster, Ericcson and Real Networks, and probably soon Cingular and T-Mobile, those in search of the new El Dorado are trying to convince the public that iPod is done for and that the time has come for the new cell phone, a device able to download and play music.

And since it's hard to take down iTunes and iPod alone, just as in gold rush, companies are starting to partner. The example set by Napster and Ericcson will be certainly followed by other mobile operators as well, so it's likely we will soon see more of these partnerships: Yahoo and Cingular or MSN and T-Mobile or any other combination you might think of.

Unfortunately for the competition, even in this situation, thanks to the partnership between Apple and Motorola, iTunes is still in pole position.
