Years of hair extensions have led to the appearance of bald spots on Naomi Campbell’s head

Hairstylists often draw attention to how damaging hair extensions are to natural hair because of the way they’re clipped on to it. That, of course, does little in terms of discouraging celebrities from having them put in, perhaps thinking such a catastrophe as to be left with balding patches would never happen to them. Naomi Campbell probably thought the same.

As the British tabloid the Daily Mail can confirm, the veteran model was recently on a photoshoot – and it was then that the world got a glimpse of her serious hair condition. Talk about how she was suffering from severe hair loss because of many years of wearing hair extensions had made headlines these past years as well, but, in all fairness, never before did the world see the full extent of the damage. Until the other day, that is, when it became clear that Naomi was almost bald on one side of the head.

“Her wild behavior is often shocking, but Naomi Campbell caused jaws to drop for entirely different reasons today. The supermodel left onlookers stunned as she revealed a huge bald patch beneath her long luscious wig while on a fashion shoot for designer Dennis Basso in New York today. The 40-year-old has revealed signs of a vanishing hairline before, but the true extent of the problem was put show as she held her hair back as a stylist adjusted her clothing. It appears that years of wearing tight hair extensions have taken as toll on the model’s natural hair, causing severe breakage,” the Mail writes.

“Hair loss associated with hair braiding, weaving, and extensions is known as ‘traction alopecia.’ Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Victoria Beckham and Alexandra Burke are all reported to have suffered similar symptoms as a result of their extensions. While prolonged traction can cause permanent loss of hair in the affected areas, it is reversible if caught early,” the publication further says. In Campbell’s case, it might already be too late, judging by the photos just revealed.

As many women know, hair extensions can do severe damage to the natural hair because of the way they’re put in. They can either be threaded / clipped or glued on natural hair, which can lead to friction and irritation. However, it’s when the extensions have to be removed that most of the damage is caused, as the natural hair often breaks in the process. Years of such practices can lead to the appearance of the so-called balding spots that Naomi seems to be sporting in the attached photo as well.

man it looks terrible!! what i don't understand is why she still insists on wearing a weave instead of a full wig.

Most black women ruin their beautiful hair trying to have flowing wind-blown cuacasian type locks and in turn lose their hair in patches or all of it. This is perpetuated by shows like Tyra Banks' Next Top Model and those reality shows that show Black Women as not beautiful if they do not have flowing hair like Beyonce, Tyra, Naomi and other so called ROLE MODELS that our young impressionable black girls are emulating and trying to be like. Why do we not see the beautiful black girl with their natural hair as beautiful? Who said that long straight was the standard of beauty? We need to teach young black girls that they are beautiful the way that they are and bolster their self-esteem instead of giving them false images to aspire to become.

I have dread locks and I wish that I would have had them all of my life. Having locks gives me a lot of freedom and I receive many compliments because I keep it well maintained and it is extremely attractive. I am noticed more because of my naturalness and I can do lots of different styles if I choose. I go swimming and not worry about my hair "going home" and I can wash it daily and just put in good leave-in conditioner and keep on the go. It takes a long time to dry, but I would not give up my locks for anything.

I believe if more black women refuse to buy into the myth that Black Hair is ugly and embace their natural curly wooly beauty, the Asian and Cauasian cosmetic and hair care market would collapse. The black women and men generate more revenue for this marketplace than any other ethnic group.

Sisters, wake up and see what this is all about. More men of color and white men have said that weaves and fake hair on black women smell and that they prefer their women with natural hair they can touch and run their fingers through, even if it is only permed and pressed. Extensions and weaves only degrade and destroy our hairlines and leave us with patches, and bald spots. I can bet you that Naomi Campbell would think twice if she had to do it all again.

Women, take back your power and go the natural "ROOT" (route), let your locks be free of chemicals, pulling, tugging, frying and dying and, NEVER, EVER let anyone tell you that your natural black hair is ugly. Keep it clean and you will be surprised how beautifully it grows and you will have more money in your pocket book, and the freedom to get more out of life doing more fun things, insted of spending hours sitting in a chair ruining your natural God-given beauty.

Best of luck ladies and men out there. Be happy with your beautiful curls and naps and stay well and healthy. Imagine all the chemicals you won't be exposed to when you become your natural self again. Be reborn.........................................
