She defended herself, she claimed she was a target for money-grabbing people, who would go to all lengths to embarrass and publicly humiliate her, she said she was not an aggressive person who beats up her maids but, at the end of the day, Naomi Campbell chose to plead guilty to hitting one of her employees with her cell phone.
At yesterday's hearing, the nine-month-old circus came to an end as the supermodel, known for her so not model-like behavior, pleaded guilty in front of a Manhattan Criminal Court judge but insisted that she hit her former maid, Ana Scolavino, with a cell phone by mistake.
The charges were brought up against Naomi after Scolavino stopped working for her and, at the time, the defense attorneys said that they were bogus, just another desperate attempt at getting revenge on being fired. The maid, on the other hand, claimed that she was struck in the head with the phone after she couldn't find a pair of jeans that Naomi really wanted to wear at an appearance on Oprah.
From the court papers, it comes out that Campbell accused Scolavino of stealing the jeans and, after calling her names, she tried to prevent her from leaving the house and going to the hospital, by summoning her personal doctor to see her. Eventually, she dashed out of the house when Campbell was talking to someone else and went straight to the hospital, where doctors had to put in four stitches to fix the gash in her head.
'I had an apartment at 500 Park Avenue. Ana Scolavino was an employee of mine. During the morning of March 30, 2006, I threw a cellphone in the apartment. The cellphone hit Ana. That was an accident because I did not intend to hit her. I am advised that Ana was hurt, and I am sorry about that.', Naomi said in a statement.
The model was sentenced to five days of community work, anger management classes and $363.32 in hospital bills for the former maid. Right now, despite this ordeal being over, Naomi still has another two suits of assault pending, in which she is accused also by her former maids of being physically and verbally aggressive.
