Symantec experts say the scam was making the rounds back in March

Last month, cybercriminals attempted to phish out the usernames and passwords of users with the aid of a website designed to look like the official page of Ahmed Shafik, an Egyptian politician and former candidate for the country’s presidency.

Internauts who visited the site were instructed to log in to their online accounts in order to receive updates regarding Shafik.

Victims were prompted to select between social media accounts or ones from the information service sector. The brands in question have not been named by Symantec, the security firm that has investigated the malicious campaign.

Once users chose one of the services, they were presented with a login page that replicated the respective company’s official website.

Those who entered their credentials on the bogus websites were actually handing them over to the cybercriminals.

As always, users are advised to be on the lookout for such scams. In case you realize you’re a victim, change your passwords as soon as possible.
