They often say that it’s the little things that can make all the difference: today, this is a video that will most certainly make viewers smile. A police officer in NYC directs traffic by dancing – and has been doing so for the past 10 years.
Wilbert Castillo is 46 years old and, because of the unusual way in which he directs traffic, has drawn the attention of the New York Post – and has become an Internet star ever since.
He says he couldn’t imagine his life without dance, which is why he feels the need of busting a move and swaying his hips even when he’s on the job, directing traffic.
Not that anyone minds, come to think of it. Commuters and people who pass by his spot to and back from their workplace even stop to have a word or shake hands with him.
Even tourists are intrigued when they see him dancing in the middle of the street but still seeing to his job’s responsibilities. In other words, Mr. Castillo is a star.
“Every spot I do, I dance. I must dance because to dance makes me feel inspirational, it makes me feel good,” he says for the New York Post about what made him dance on the job in the first place.
Plus, aside from the admiration of so many people, Mr. Castillo also reaps other benefits for his unusual way of doing his job: dancing keeps him in top shape, which is why he can boast of being a very fit 46-year-old.
“It’s like exercising, instead of standing in one place and calling the traffic and looking mean – let’s enjoy [it] and work hard,” Mr. Castillo says.
He also reveals that he first started dancing because he wanted to change people’s perception that New Yorkers weren’t exactly nice or approachable.
“I’m a happy man and I want to sell New York. If they’re sad or worn out and I make them smile, I’ve done my job,” he explains, also for the New York Post.
In the same video, one driver is heard saying, “He’s a star, he should be on Broadway.”
It looks like Mr. Castillo is doing his job wonderfully – below is the video to see for yourself. Enjoy.
