Animal rights activists who have spent the past years protesting NYC's carriage horse industry might soon get what they have so vehemently been asking for.

Democrat Bill de Blasio and Republican Joe Lhota, who are both leading NYC Mayoral candidates, agree that this practice is inhumane and, according to Ecorazzi, they are ready and willing to offer their support to a bill intended to put an end to it.

Activist Susan Wagner with Equine Advocates says that, although some might think that these horses are treated right and do not suffer any abuses at the hands of their owners, this is by no means the case.

“The truth is that NYC carriage horses are literally working for their lives,” Susan explains.

“They have to bring in a certain amount of money or they disappear. Keeping this vicious cycle going is just feeding the horse slaughter business. Stopping the carriage horse trade would at least end any more NYC carriage horses from ending up at slaughter,” she adds.

Should a bill outlawing horse-drawn rides in NYC be instituted, some 200 animals will have to be sent to sanctuaries across the country.
