Out of the box support for the Linux 2.6.25 kernel

NVidia decided to please the Linux world and launched another version of their graphics driver. The new display driver is version 173.14.05, which doesn't bring so many changes in comparison with the Beta releases.

What does the NVidia 173.14.05 driver bring? It comes with support for GeForce 9800GTX, 9800GX2, 9600GS, 9600GSO, 9600GT, 9500M GS, 8400 and 8400GS graphics cards. Most of the bugfixes are related to the GeForce 8 and 9 series and some regression fixes related to the OpenGL rendering corruption, EDID data and hotkey switching plus power management support on some notebooks.

One of the most important updates is the preliminary support for the X.Org server 1.5. This version of the X.Org server is used by Fedora 9, for example, and because there was no support for it, users could not enjoy the full potential of their system and the eye candy provided by Compiz Fusion. Speaking of X, a problem that made its startup fail on some GeForce 8 and 9 systems without swap space got fixed.

The NVidia 173.14.05 driver ships with "out of the box" support for the Linux 2.6.25 kernel but if you have a Linux distribution that uses the Linux 2.6.26-rc kernel, you will have to patch the 173.14.05 driver on your own.

I'm sure that those of you who use Fedora 9 have waited for this driver to appear and use your Linux distribution at its full capacity. That's why we have created this tutorial to help you out with the installation of the new driver plus the addition of AWN in Fedora 9.
