NVIDIA appears to be working on a successor for the popular Tegra Note 7

NVIDIA launched its first tablet product, the Tegra Note 7 last year and the device became quite popular with consumers, especially due its attractive price tag.

Then at MWC 2014, the chip maker showed the LTE version of the device and also put on display a prototype of the Tegra Note 7 which ran on NVIDIA’s latest Tegra K1 processor and offered full HD display, as opposed to the original model.

Judging by the positive feedback NVIDIA received with its first tablet, it’s no wonder the company would consider building a successor. A recent filling on the GFXBench website showed the chip maker might already have a new tablet product in the pipe-line.

The device has been code-named NVIDIA Mocha, but at this moment it is still unclear whether this is actually a viable product or some sort of internal prototype currently used for testing activities.

The tablet comes with quite an impressive spec sheet, showing a device that could easily rival Apple’s iPad mini with Retina Display.

The specifications on the GFXBench website have been removed since they have been first spotted, but the guys over at TabTech managed to snap a screenshot before that happened.

The NVIDIA Mocha comes packed with a 2.1 GHz Tegra K1 ARM Cortex-A15 processor, just like the reference slate put on display at MWC 2014 in Barcelona a few months ago. But unlike that particular prototype, the Mocha comes with a 7.9-inch display and 2048 x 1546 pixel resolution.

The slate is fitted with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and natural has two cameras onboard (7MP on the back and 4.8MP in front). Mocha also has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and runs Android 4.4 KitKat software out of the box.

If the revealed specs turn out to be those of a real tablet, it appears we could soon be seeing new Android devices from NVIDIA packing higher resolution displays, supported by the company’s new chip that bundles 192-core graphics.

Apart from the NVIDIA Tegra Note tablet, the chip-maker also has the Tegra Shield game console on the market, that only features a 720p display like the tablet. Both are inexpensive devices that sell for very low-price tags.

Nevertheless, with the addition of premium features, the rates for the Mocha will probably be higher than just $200 / €145.

It will be very exciting to see if the NVIDIA Mocha becomes a reality and who knows, maybe this is going to be a slate that will be getting stylus support like the Tegra Note 7, too.
