NVIDIA is currently in the second quarter of tis Fiscal year 2012, and it looks like it has finished analyzing its performance during the first one, as revealed in a recent press release,

like all other companies in the industry, NVIDIA has to periodically offer updates on its financial situation, especially once a yearly quarter is over and done with.

In this instance, the Santa Clara, California-based GPU maker has published its results for the first three-month period of FY (Fiscal Year) 2012.

This period ended on the first of May, 2011, and showed more or less mixed results, although mostly on the so-called good side, since the outlook for the second quarter is positive.

Total revenue was of $962 million, which implies an increase of 8.5 percent over Q4 of FY 2011, albeit an on-year drop of $4 percent (from $1 billion).

Speaking of Q2 outlook, NVIDIA expects a 4 to 6 percent rise, provided the expenses involved in the acquisition of Icera are not taken into account.

GAAP net income was of $135.2 million, less than the 137.6 million of Q1 of FY 2010, and even less than the 171.7 million of Q4 FY2011.

"Our core GPU businesses are solid, with expanding revenues and margins. And this quarter, our Tegra mobile business took off," said Jen-Hsun Huang, NVIDIA president and chief executive officer.

"With the Tegra super chip and the Icera wireless communication processor, we will offer our customers the two most important processors of the mobile computing revolution. We look forward to completing the Icera acquisition shortly."

NVIDIA's business strategy during the ongoing quarter will revolve around the GeForce GTX 590 dual-GPU graphics card and the GeForce GTX 550 Ti.

Of course, the Tegra line of mobile SoC (system-on-chip) devices will also play a major role, especially with all the activity on the part of smartphone and tablet makers.
