Back in late March, when NVIDIA finally unveiled its much-anticipated Fermi-based GeForce cards, people all over the world took interest in their performance details, as revealed by a bunch of online reviews. As soon as everything was clear, in the sense that NVIDIA's new GPU took the performance crown from AMD's Evergreen GPUs, a couple of questions spawned in the minds of computer enthusiasts. One of them was related to NVIDIA's capability to roll out a mobile version of its power-hungry Fermi GPU. On that note, the Santa Clara, California-based company announced today the formal introduction of its new GTX480M graphics chip.

Pretty much in the same way it did with the desktop version of this GPU, the GeForce GTX 480M is claimed as the world's fastest notebook GPU, which should be a delight to gaming and computer enthusiasts out there. With the new GPU, NVIDIA now enters the relatively new market of DirectX 11 notebook PCs, but also enables consumers to take advantage of some of its unique technologies, including PhysX and 3D Vision.

As far as the “juicy” details are concerned, the new behemonth from NVIDIA is set to run at a clock speed of 425MHz, combined with 352 CUDA cores ready to work at 850MHz for your full gaming enjoyment. There's also 1GB of GDDR5 memory, with a speed of 2400MHz, all of it comprised in a package that is set to become available in future gaming laptops, starting next month.

Unfortunately, for the time being, NVIDIA only mentions Clevo as one of the first adopters of its latest mobile GPU, but promises that more GTX 480M-equipped PCs will be rolled out in the future. Until that time, be sure to check out the company's latest drivers, which add a number of performance enhancements, especially in DirectX 11 games.
