NVIDIA has made available for download a new set of graphics drivers designed to make GeForce GPU play nice with the latest public development milestone of the next iteration of the Windows client. The new GeForce graphics drivers tailored to Windows 7 Beta Build 7000 went live on March 2, 2009, and are now up for grabs. NVIDIA explained the need to offer graphics drivers for Windows 7 at this early stage due to the high number of GeForce customers that installed the Beta Build 7000 release of the operating system.

“Since its release last month, the Windows 7 Beta has been eagerly tested by hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GeForce owners, who are excited about the many graphical improvements Microsoft has added into the upcoming operating system,” explained Ujesh Desai, vice president of GeForce desktop business at NVIDIA.

Microsoft made Windows 7 Beta available as a public download on January 10, 2009. The bits served until February 12, with the Redmond company applauding in excess of a few million downloads. NVIDIA indicated that, despite Windows 7 Beta Build 7000 having been discontinued the past month, version 181.71 of its graphics drivers was just the first step in its commitment to support Windows 7. GeForce owners should in fact expect regular NVIDIA driver updates for the successor of Windows Vista moving onward.

“We expect that all of our hard work teaming with Microsoft over the past two years will pay off for GeForce GPU owners when Windows 7 officially launches,” added Dwight Diercks, vice president of software engineering at NVIDIA. “Our customers are demanding an experience that is faster and more visual, and with the addition of many new GPU-accelerated features, including DirectX Compute, we believe Windows 7 will be well positioned to meet those needs.”

GeForce version 181.71 graphics drivers come to the table with support for Windows 7's new Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) v1.1. The graphics card manufacturer is promising no less than boosted performance and reliability for 2D, 3D applications and Windows Aero via the GeForce version 181.71 graphics drivers in combination with WDDM v1.1.
