Mac Pro users whose workstations rely on the powerful NVIDIA Quadro 4000 graphics card may want to install additional software, after performing the Mac OS X 10.6.7 software update from Apple.

According to reports, users of NVIDIA's Quadro 4000 workstation graphics card have experienced problems with 3D acceleration after updating to Mac OS X 10.6.7, the latest Snow Leopard update from Cupertino.

At fault is the incompatibility of drivers with OS X 10.6.7.

According to a post at TUAW, installing 10.6.7 simply removes the incompatible software that was otherwise vital for the NVIDIA graphics card to do 3D acceleration.

Not to worry though, says NVIDIA.

“In order to run Mac OS X Applications that leverage the CUDA architecture of the Quadro 4000 for Mac product, users will need to download and install the CUDA 3.2 driver for Mac,” the computer hardware company said.

“This driver update is required and fixes performance issues introduced with the latest Software Update from Apple,” according to NVIDIA.

Quadro 4000 requires at least Mac OS X v10.6.5 or newer to run, but NVIDIA notes that because OS X does not yet have native support for the Quadro 4000 for Mac, users will need to install the driver before installing the hardware.

NVIDIA further clarifies that, “This driver update is for Mac Pro 5,1 (2010), Mac Pro 4,1 (2009) and Mac Pro 3,1 (2008) users only, whose owners would like to use the new Quadro 4000 for Mac graphics card.”

Also noteworthy is that customers running Quadro FX 4800 for Mac or the GeForce GTX 285 will not need to upgrade to this driver.

Supported languages for this driver include Chinese (both simplified and traditional), English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and Spanish.
