NVIDIA has just announced the immediate availability for download of a new certified version of its graphics driver for Linux operating systems, 331.38.

The new Linux display driver, 331.38, comes with a lot of fixes and various changes for numerous crashes and problems.

It's been quite a while since the latest NVIDIA drivers update, but the Holiday Season is now over and the developers have started releasing updates again. Highlights of NVIDIA 331.38 Linux driver:

• A bug that caused the X server to crash if the video memory was exhausted and the GPU did not support rendering to system memory has been fixed; • The nvidia-installer has been updated in order to make the --multiple-kernel-modules option imply the --no-unified-memory option. Unified memory is incompatible with multiple kernel modules; • The behavior of the nvidia-settings PowerMizer Preferred Mode drop-down menu has been improved and it's now able to make the setting apply consistently across all GPUs in an SLI group; • The robustness of the NVIDIA X driver in scenarios, where the GPU-accessible memory for allocating pixmaps was exhausted, has been improved; • According to the developers, NV-CONTROL attributes have been added in order to control the brightness of the illuminated logos on certain graphics boards. For example, to turn off the illumination of the "GEFORCE GTX" lettering on the GeForce GTX 780, you must use nvidia-settings --assign GPULogoBrightness=0; • A bug that prevented screen transformations from being applied properly when starting X has been added; • The GLX Protocol for the miscellaneous OpenGL 3.0 commands and not associated with specific extensions has been promoted from the unofficial to ARB approved status.
