Mac OS X software developer danholt4mac has announced its acquiring Calories from its original makers, NSObjects. danholt4mac has an impressive portfolio of OS X apps, but apparently it wasn't complete without NSObjects' journaling app for daily nutrition activities.

Calories will be developed from now on by danholt4mac. The developer's website greets Calories users with the announcement: “Welcome Calories User! danholt4mac acquired Calories from NSObjects! From now on, you will find Calories right here at danholt4mac. Stay tuned for future updates!”

Currently at version 1.2, Calories has users dragging and dropping the dishes they've had during the day on their predetermined category tabs. The application calculates the amount of calories taken in on that particular day, and allows its users to track their weekly, monthly and even yearly progress from the same window, managing as many as 6,900 foods.

In addition to calories, carbs, fat and protein, the application calculates and displays more than 40 nutrients, minerals and ingredients like Alcohol, Zink, Vitamins, etc. Calories also offers simple reporting functionality, while users may switch to reporting mode with the option to display reports for the day, week, month or year.

With Calories 1.2, users can set goals for all nutrients in the preferences window, export their diet as comma-separated values document (CSV) that can be opened with most spreadsheet applications, and more.

A demo version of Calories is available, which is limited to just 100 foods, but you can keep the free software for as long as you want (since it is limited to 100 dishes, not uses). Calories incorporates the USDA Food Database for Dietary Study 3.0, and can keep track of your dietary habits based on 44 different nutrients. The application is a Universal Binary, but requires Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) to run. You may download and try the software using the link below. The full version costs US$19 to buy.
