Another media organization targeted by the infamous hacker group

The Syrian Electronic Army, the hacker collective that supports the Syrian regime, has attacked yet another media organization. Its latest targets are websites and some Twitter accounts of NPR, a US public radio station.

“Late Monday evening, several stories on the NPR website were defaced with headlines and text that said ‘Syrian Electronic Army Was Here.’ Some of these stories were distributed to and appeared on NPR Member Station websites,” NPR has stated.

“We have made the necessary corrections to those stories on NPR.org and are continuing to work with our Member Stations. Similar statements were posted on several NPR Twitter accounts. Those Twitter accounts have been addressed. We are closely monitoring the situation.”

In addition to defacing the website, the hackers have also published an email sent by an NPR managing editor to staff, which might indicate that they’ve also breached some email accounts.

The hackers haven’t revealed their reasons for targeting NPR, but it’s likely that it has something to do with its Syria coverage. Numerous media organizations have been attacked by the Syrian Electronic Army in the past, being accused of publishing false stories about the situation in Syria.
