Electronic Arts shows great results on the Wii

Charts and sales rule the world around us, and now, thanks to the NPD group, we can see how they ruled the world of video games in the month of June. Don't forget that what was said in the hardware chart is also true for this software one.

Drops were registered across the board and a comparison to the month of June 2008 shows an overall decrease of 31 percent. NPD analyst Anita Frazier revealed that: “this month saw the greatest year-over-year monthly decline since September 2000, when the industry declined 41 percent.”

In terms of video game sales, the loss was pegged at around 29 percent, as the charts show 234.64 million dollars in recorded sales. But this top ten of best sellers holds a few interesting surprises, namely that the juggernaut that is Wii Play hasn't managed to enter it, for the first time since it was released in February 2007. For those keeping track, that was an incredible record of 29 months.

Prototype dominates its opposition, but it seems that only on the Xbox 360, as its PlayStation 3 counterpart hasn't managed to be very successful. Hot on its heels is UFC 2009: Undisputed, which took down its opposition, Fight Night Round 4. UFC also managed the same feat as Prototype, as only its Xbox 360 version managed to reach the top ten.

Electronic Arts has achieved an incredible presence on the Wii, being one of the few third-party publishers achieving blockbuster success on the small platform, all thanks to moms and dads who own the console and who bought EA Sports Active and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10. Coupled with the reasonable success of Fight Night Round 4, things are going great for the publisher.

Other notable mentions go to THQ's Red Faction: Guerrilla title, which was released at the beginning of June and managed to move almost 200.000 units. Props also go to Sucker Punch's inFamous, which achieved over 190,000 units sold.

Here is the complete list, as charted by the NPD Group:

1. Prototype (Radical, Activision) Xbox 360: 419.900 2. UFC 2009: Undisputed (Yuke's, THQ) Xbox 360: 338.300 3. EA Sports Active Bundle (EA Canada, EA) Wii: 289.100 4. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 (EA Tiburon, EA) Wii: 272.400 5. Wii Fit (Nintendo) Wii: 271.600 6. Fight Night Round 4 (EA Canada, EA) Xbox 360: 260.800 7. Fight Night Round 4 (EA Canada, EA) PlayStation 3: 210.300 8. Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo) Wii: 202.100 9. Red Faction: Guerrilla (Volition, THQ) Xbox 360: 199.400 10. Infamous (Sucker Punch, Sony) PlayStation 3: 192.700

Overall, even though a drop was recorded, it seems that games are still selling, but just barely, as Frazier points out that: “Prototype was the top selling title for the month, realizing roughly 600K units at retail across the two platforms. While this is solid performance for new IP, it's a relatively modest sales figure for any game capturing the top spot for the month.”
