Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the first person shooter from developer Infinity Ward and publisher Activision Blizzard, has managed to take the number one position in the video game chart published by the NPD Group for the month of November 2011 in the United States.

The game is judged to have sold a little over 9 million units during its first month on sale, although the publisher has not yet officially confirmed the number.

Second place went to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, from Bethesda, which managed to do very well although it was launched after Battlefield 3, which managed to get third spot in the United States.

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, from publisher Ubisoft, has sold well enough to take fourth place ahead of Just Dance 3, another Ubisoft title.

Madden NFL 12, from the EA Sports division of Electronic Arts, has taken sixth place in the chart while PlayStation 3 exclusive Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, from Sony and Naughty Dog, managed to occupy seventh place with sales of about 700,000 units.

Saints Row: The Third, from THQ and Volition, is in eight place while ninth went to The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword from Nintendo, with sales of 600,000 copies.

The top ten is closed down by Batman: Arkham City, from Rocksteady and Warner Bros.

Anita Frazier, who is an analyst with the NPD Group, stated, “While content sales grew substantially thanks to a great slate of new content, a decline in average retail price in all categories with the exception of portable hardware resulted in flat dollar sales even though unit sales grew for console hardware, as well as console, portable, and PC software.”

Software sales have increased by more than 15 percent when compared to the same period in 2010, reaching 1.67 billion dollars (1.25 billion Euro) but that has not helped the industry overall, with the hardware continuing its decline.
