The NPD Group is announcing that the Xbox One home console has managed to sell more units during the month of April 2015 than the PlayStation 4 from Sony, the first time the feat was achieved since January.

According to Venture Beat, overall spending on hardware has increased when compared to the same period of 2014, and overall, 12 percent more devices were moved to fans during the tracked period, which is a significant increment.

It seems that the Xbox One has managed to deliver 187,000 units to customers in April, but Sony has not offered any details about the sales numbers associated with the PlayStation 4.

The company is willing to say, however, that it is continuing to lead the overall current-gen console race and that more video games were sold for the PlayStation brand than for any other set of platforms.

The Xbox One has managed to post an increase of 63 percent when compared to 2014, which shows that recent measures taken by Microsoft to boost its profile have actually worked.

The 3DS has managed to deliver another 116,000 handhelds to its fans, while the Wii U home console from Nintendo continues to underperform at around 43,000.

The overall video game industry has managed to generate more sales in April of this year than during the same period of 2014, with strong performance for the new devices from Microsoft and Sony the main reason for the improvement.

Mortal Kombat X takes number one in the software chart

Video game sales also increased during the month despite the fact that only a small number of AAA titles were launched.

Mortal Kombat X, from NetherRealms and Warner Bros., has managed to take the number one position in the NPD Group software chart, which only tracks physical sales.

Number two belongs to Grand Theft Auto V from Rockstar, and the last position on the podium was occupied by Battlefield Hardline from Visceral Games and Electronic Arts.

The rest of the top ten includes: MLB 15: The Show, Minecraft, NBA 2K15, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin, Super Smash Bros., and Borderlands: The Handsome Collection.

May might be another growth month for the video game industry before the arrival of summer, which tends to limit both major new launches and hardware sales.
