The NPD Group says that hardware sales associated with gaming in the United States have declined by 40 percent during the month of August as an ever smaller group of gamers is ready to spend money before the launch of the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4.

Overall spending reached 2013 million dollars (161 million Euro).

The Nintendo-made 3DS handheld is the best-selling device and has seen an increase in its unit of 30% when compared to the same period in 2012.

The Xbox 360 is the home console that leads the chart for the 32nd consecutive month, managing to deliver 96,000 devices to players.

Microsoft says that pre-orders for the Xbox One are at the moment double those seen for the 360 at the same moment before launch.

Sony did not offer any sales figures.

The launch of the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 in November is expected to push up overall sales for 2013.
