A report from the NPD Group, which tracks video game hardware and software sales in the United States, says that about 29 percent of players intend to buy one member of the next generation of consoles on launch.

The polled gamers were selected because they are over nine years old and play for at least five hours during one week on the PC, the Mac, the PlayStation 3 or the Xbox 360.

The sample was fairly small, made up of 887 individuals, which might suggest that more information is required about the purchase plans of the general public, according to Gamezone.

Sony revealed the PlayStation 4 late in February, and Microsoft is widely expected to show off its own next-gen Xbox 720 during an event in late April.

Both are expected to launch before the end of 2013.
