EA has once again picked on Gran Turismo 5 and Forza Motorsport 3, saying, through the voice of the Need for Speed: Shift 2 Unleashed's lead designer, Andy Tudor, that the game will deliver a great experience, without 1,000 irrelevant cars.

[admark=1]EA also revealed a few weeks ago that NFS: Shift 2 would go on to capture racing simulator fans, without reaching a 60fps framerate, like Forza 3, or having tons of cars, like Gran Turismo 5.

Now, Tudor revealed that the studio behind Shift 2, Slightly Mad, was targeting the big racing simulators out there, and criticized them for their boring mechanics.

"We're very clearly going after the sim guys," he said.

"Those two games are on pedestals at the moment. When we're thinking about what we want to do in this game, it's not a numbers game. We're not going to add a thousand irrelevant cars. Both those games, to me, are almost like encyclopedias. You've got a thousand cars, a thousand tracks, whatever, and basically the game is about earning cash to get another car, earning cash to get another car. It's like a grind. It's almost like stamp collecting."

According to Tudor, that isn't exactly fun, so Shift 2 will aim at finding a balance between the number of relevant cars, which are desired by racing fans, and the control over the simulation aspects.

"It's a different way of thinking, basically. We want to take those guys on. We want to make a more authentic experience. We've put in a new elite handling model and give you more access over deadzone, sensitivity, steering aids, break assists, all that kind of stuff, to allow you to dial in the experience you want."

Need for Speed: Shift 2 Unleashed is set to appear in Spring of 2011, for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms.
