NETGEAR has just released a new firmware update for its R7000 “Nighthawk” smart wireless router. Version 1.0.2.194 comes with loads of new stuff, such as VPN Auto Route support and a separate attached device list for 2.4G and 5G.

Another interesting change is the 2.4G Wi-Fi mode, which is now set to “Up to 289Mbps” by default.

Fixes are present as well and refer to the potential router GUI crash when accessing QoS page or when using Genie v2.3.1.13. Also, the compatibility issue noticed on iTunes server airplay with Apple TV 6.0 has been repaired.

To install, download the NETGEAR R7000 Router Firmware 1.0.2.194, extract the archive, then connect your device via Ethernet cable to your PC. Access the unit via browser at the http://www.routerlogin.net address.

In the “Advanced” tab select “Administration” and then “Firmware Upgrade.” Browse for the “chk” file you've recently extracted and click “Upload.”

During the update process, do not interrupt the router by powering it off. When the installation is complete, the router will restart.
