Microsoft is using CodePlex for distribution and not the Download Center

Microsoft has wrapped up version 4.2 of the .NET Micro Framework and gave downloads green light over at the official site on CodePlex. Customers shouldn’t bother looking for .NET Micro Framework 4.2 RTM on the Microsoft Download Center, since the company is using its online repository for open source projects to distribute the release.

But this should not be any real surprise, especially since the .NET Micro Framework is an open source project.

The latest update comes with a number of enhancements, including remote firmware updating capabilities. What this means is that customers will be able to update the firmware on their devices remotely using the .NET Micro Framework SDK and PK (Porting Kit).

At the same time, there are a number of additional enhancements introduced in .NET Micro Framework 4.2 RTM, including:

“- Complete Cryptographic Object Model over PCKS #11: Most types and algorithms used in the desktop framework are now supported. PKCS #11 allows extensibility at the firmware level for adding new cryptographic tokens.

- 1-Wire, PWM and A/D object model: Support for PWM and A/D operations is now provided as a standard interface. 1-Wire is provided through a community development effort.

- Support for Cortex M3 devices with STM32 processor family samples: The support for the STM32 family is provided as a community development effort and features two solutions for two different development boards. See the Porting Kit for details,” Microsoft’s Colin Miller revealed.

With the advent of the .NET Micro Framework 4.2 RTM, developers will now be able to leverage VB.NET when building projects using the SDK.

According to the Redmond company, support for SNTP and FTP (both client and server), as well as for StringBuilder and Regex types is available only through the involvement of the .NET Micro Framework community.

Customers leveraging .NET Micro Framework 4.2 RTM can also take advantage of the PKStudio, in order to build new solutions for the Porting Kit environment.
