Any less and the installation will fail

The final version of .NET Framework 4 has been available for download for quite some time, but never fails to have an extra look at the system requirements, just to avoid any surprises. Fact is that there is little to surprise customers when it comes down to the computers capable of playing nice with the latest iteration of .NET. However, there is one aspect which needs to be taken into consideration. When installed on 64-bit (x64) copies of Windows, .NET Framework 4 requires no less than 2 GB of free hard disk space.

Any less, and the deployment will simply fail. Microsoft’s Jeremy Jameson found this out the hard way, after .NET Framework 4 refused to install on one of his servers. Of course, actually freeing up the necessary space on the hard drive will allow .NET 4 to deploy without any problems whatsoever.

“It still seems a little shocking that nearly 2 GB of disk space can be subsequently consumed after installing a 48.1 MB download, but I did, in fact, end up with a mere 107 MB of free space after installing .NET Framework 4 on [the] server,” Jameson stated.

Microsoft released .NET Framework 4 concomitantly with the RTM version of Visual Studio 2010 in the first half of April 2010. I included the download links for the latest iteration of Microsoft’s development platform and tools at the bottom of this article.

“The .NET Framework is Microsoft's comprehensive and consistent programming model for building applications that have visually stunning user experiences, seamless and secure communication, and the ability to model a range of business processes. The .NET Framework 4 works side by side with older Framework versions. Applications that are based on earlier versions of the Framework will continue to run on the version targeted by default,” Microsoft stated.
